Chapter 14

“So, all she took was your laptop?” said Bauer. He snapped his fingers at one of his intel staff across the tactical operations room. A petite brunette named Carly trotted over to his desk. He pulled back from the phone. “Put a trace on Brant’s laptop and also see if there has been any unusual activity on her console back here.”

The woman nodded then returned to her workstation as Bauer stood up, his gaze fixed on a floor-to-ceiling computer screen that showed a half-dozen images from cases his staff were working on.

“And what about Archer—he’s good?”

“As always, but down another life, so that probably only leaves him with two now,” quipped Brant.

“The woman who attacked you—describe her again.”

“Mid-thirties, about five-ten, shoulder-length red hair. Small, curved scar on her chin. And what looked like a faded tattoo of a black bird on the inside of her right wrist.” Brant paused for a second. “Did I already mention that she had advanced combatives training?”

“Yet she peppered the room with bullets, missing you.”

“I thought about that too. She just wanted to get away with the laptop.”

“Or you weren’t on her kill list. She probably had a narrow mission focus, heading to interview Polanski’s brother at his compound then tailing you two. But how did she know you were there is the question?”

“Maybe she hacked into the security system at Lucius’ place.”

Bauer leaned back, stroking the stubble on his chin as his mind drifted to another continent in another time. “An image of a raven on her wrist, you say.”

“I’m not sure that’s what it was; just a bird. Look, is there something you want to share with me?”

“Just stay on task and head to the university to interview Polanski’s colleague. Emerson and Halsey are still looking into leads in Vancouver, so plan to head there after you’re done in Eugene. I’ll be in touch shortly with the specifics.”

Bauer set down his phone and returned to his seat, furiously typing on his laptop. He extracted an old case file from his time with the CIA, his eyes scanning the images of operatives. They were classified into three categories: asset, colleague, or ally. He clicked on the latter category, narrowing the search to a list of six women. Bauer scrolled down the column, clicking on the folder labeled “Anna 835.”

Bauer scrutinized the brunette woman with almond-colored eyes and a comma-shaped scar to the right of her chin. “Are you still in the game after all these years, Anna?” He thought back to a covert mission in Turkmenistan 11 years ago and the woman operative he had teamed up with to complete his assassination of a high-level political player who had double-crossed the Agency. Anna Karonina, an alias no doubt, was at that time the agency’s rising star field agent in Eastern Europe.

Their mission was completed without incident, and both of them found themselves adrift for two weeks afterwards, typical of agency wet-work so things could die down while the psy-ops division worked their magic in diffusing any political ramifications.
